PUBLIC SECTOR DECARBONISATION SCHEME (PSDS)

Rochdale leisure centres go green as part of £11m energy project

INSIGHT

Rochdale Borough Council believe climate change will impact the lives of everybody who lives and works in the borough of Rochdale unless they take action. Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) secured £79m of funding to improve public buildings across its boroughs under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS).

IDEA

Rochdale Leisure Centre and Middleton Arena, both public swimming pool facilities, were identified as opportunities to decrease energy and carbon emissions. EQUANS secured the tender to design and construct the retrofit schemes.

What will the project deliver?

Significant reduction in carbon footprint by replacement of the fossil-fired boilers with heat-pumps as the primary source of heating for the pools and air-handling equipment.

THE SOLUTION

Elevate audited the buildings and produced concept designs for the holistic energy improvement packages including:

  • The design was produced in detail (BSRIA Stage 4) and construction and commissioning witnessed by Elevate.

  • Using hydraulic digital twin software, we also identified and validated beneficial alterations to existing hydraulic configurations to optimise heat pump integration.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) and Ground Source Heat Pumps (WSHPs) and associated works

  • Improvements to existing hydraulic and ventilation systems
